Disposables vs. Pod Systems: Which Should You Choose?
A plain-English comparison of disposable vapes and refillable pod systems to help you pick the right fit.
If you’re new to vaping, the two most common starting points are disposable vapes and pod systems. Both have their place — here’s how they actually differ day to day.
Disposables: simplest possible setup
A disposable vape arrives charged and pre-filled. There’s no e-liquid to buy separately, nothing to refill, and nothing to charge (on most models) — once it’s empty, it’s empty. That makes disposables a good fit if you want the lowest-effort option, or you’re not ready to commit to buying e-liquid and coils separately.
The trade-off is cost per puff: because the device, battery and e-liquid are all bundled and thrown away together, disposables generally cost more over time than a refillable setup.
Pod systems: lower running cost, a little more upkeep
A pod system is a small reusable device with a refillable (or replaceable) pod. You buy e-liquid separately and top up the pod as needed, and recharge the device via USB-C between sessions. It takes a few extra minutes of upkeep, but the running cost per mL of e-liquid is usually lower, and you get more control over flavour and nicotine strength since you choose the e-liquid.
Quick way to decide
- Want the absolute simplest option with nothing to maintain? Start with a disposable.
- Vape regularly and want to reduce ongoing cost? A pod system pays off over time.
- Not sure yet? A starter kit bundles a pod system with everything you need to get going.
